Greenland is the largest island in the world. It was the part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but since 1979 it was granted self-government. Now, they are a separate country with close relations with Denmark. Greenland is a very interesting tourist destination, because it’s a very interesting country. The size is 2.166.086km² (1.755.637km² ice-covered). The population is just 56.749. The country code is +299.
Greenland isn’t a member of the European Union nor the Schengen Agreement. In order to visit this country, you must have a valid passport. Citizens from: Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Faroe Islands and Canadians (only members of the Inuit First Nations) can go to Greenland without a visa. They can stay as long as they want. Citizens from countries that are member of the European Union and Switzerland, can stay in Greenland up to 90 days without a visa. This rule applies to many other countries. You must contact your embassy in order to see do you need a visa.
There are two important airports in Greenland. They are: Kangerlussuaq and Narsarsuaq. Two air companies are providing a good connection between Greenland and the other countries. Air Greenland is the national air company and Air Iceland operates during summer months between Greenland and Iceland. Greenland doesn’t have roads or railways, so the best way to move is an airplane.
The official language is Greenlandic. But, the Danish language is widely spoken. Also, a lot of people speak English language.
The official currency is the Danish krone. Credit cards are not widely accepted, so you should have cash. However, the number of services accepting credit cards is growing.
