The cathedral of Pisa has its bell tower called the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is popular all over the world for the tilt it has to one side. The tower began leaning on one side while it was being constructed. It turned out that the base on which the foundation of the tower stands is too soft to support the weight of the tower on one side. Over the years, the inclination of the tower assumed a greater angle till the inclination was stabilized by the combined efforts of architects from all over the world.
The tower is believed to be of 14,500 metric tonnes. It has about 295 steps leading to its top. The construction of the tower was initiated in August 1173 and it took about 199 years to complete the construction in three different stages. The construction took such a long time probably because it had to be stopped for about a hundred years. This was because the inclination towards one side had begun to show itself from the very initial stages. This was probably because the foundations of the tower rested on unstable soil.
The ensuing tussle between the administrators and rulers of that era also effected a pause. It was finally completed in 1372. all said and done, the leaning tower of Pisa attracts a huge number of tourists to Italy every year. The government of Italy implored to other countries in 1964 to prevent the tower from falling over. It wanted to maintain the tilt typical to the tower because it attracted a large number of tourists to Italy that translate into income for the country.
