Earth-friendly air fresheners

Many of the air fresheners that you buy at the store are potentially toxic. They smell great and create a rather pleasant atmosphere in your house, your car, and the bathroom, etc. However, they are probably not doing you or the environment any good.

There are options that are not only earth-friendly but are also not harmful to you. According to some studies, some of the chemicals used in commercial air fresheners coat your nasal passage and make you lose any sense of smell temporarily.

Some of these chemicals are:

  • Phenol - irritates the skin and nervous system
  • Butanoic acid- organ toxicity
  • Formaldehyde - carcinogen
  • Dimethylformamide - carcinogen, organ system toxicity

And the list goes on.

Green Options

Fortunately, manufacturers have been listening to consumers and have been working on greener alternatives.  There are commercial brands that cater to those who are concerned about their health and the environment. Look for the "green" label on these products to identify them.

However, you should also be cautious as some of them will try to grab your attention with a big label reading, "elaborated with natural pine tree essence”, or something of the like. What about the other ingredients? Always check the list of ingredients for potentially harmful substances.

Green Fresheners Brewed at Home

One effective way of getting rid of unwanted odors is opening the windows a little more.  However, if space is too closed, then you can brew a natural freshener. Here are some ideas that can help:

  • 1 or 2 teaspoons of vanilla essence in small containers placed all over your house.
  • 1 tablespoon of salt in a half of an orange with the flesh scooped out.
  • If you have acidic odors, you can soak them up with baking soda.
  • A couple of drops of essential oil in an atomizer with water and spray around the house.
  • You can also moisten a cotton ball with a couple drops of essential oil and place it in inconspicuous places in your house.
