There is plenty to see and do in new Oradour-sur-Glane. There are museums, hotels, campsites, many places to eat and attractions to see. The place is simply referred to as “Oradour”. It is in the Haute-Vienne, Department 87 of France, and is located about 15 miles west of Limoges. This part of France is within an area known today as the Languedoc. The area of Haute-Vienne itself is predominantly agricultural, with very little industry outside Limoges itself.
The Centre de la Mémoire is the current visitor center for the ruins of Oradour-sure-Glane. It opened in April 1999. During the day, you can park your vehicle with no charge. Along with this, there is often a war or terrorist-related exhibition held in the Centre, and there will usually be a separate admissions fee.
There are several hotels in the new Oradour. They are easy to find, and quite a few of them would be considered “fancy”, such as the Hotel de la Glane. A good thing about the village is it is so small it would be almost impossible to get lost, so finding your destinations should be quite easy.
The ruins of Oradour contain a vast and rich history spanning several hundred years. However, it was destroyed in 1944 by a German Waffen-SS company. German Nazis massacred over 600 people including women and children. Though a new city was built nearby, New Oradour, French President Charles de Gaulle ordered the ruins to remain as a permanent memorial to the cruelty of the Nazis and to remain a historical museum.
